Teacher training: Life, Language,and Culture in Comtemporary Britain

The tradition at Sønderborg Statsskole to encourage teachers and students to participate in international and European activities such as training programmes and exchange projects, in order to establish and sustain the awareness of being a part of an international/European community. The relevant project aims at improving the proficiency in the English spoken language and increasing the knowledge of present day British life, culture, and language in order to develop teaching practise and improving the student's communicative competences.The planned activity involves one English teacher who will take part in Pilgrim's Teaching Course. The course aims to provide the participants with the opportunity to practise their spoken English while gaining a wider understanding of key issues in modern British society such as UK humour, class, gender, education, crime, subcultures and multiculturalism. The programme involves various activities; lectures, discussions, group work...As an concrete benefit the project will establish contacts with European schools and Engiish teachers in other European countries. Hopefully, the contacts can be used for planning future study tours and exchange projects. For the participant the course aims to improve her language skills and communicative competences which will be for the benefit of the students at Sønderborg Statsskole. Furthermore, the aquired knowledge about present day Britain and the teaching culture in an ELT setting will be shared with colleagues both at the participant's own school and at partner schools in the educational community and hopefully this can serve asa long term benefit in terms of inspiringe colleagues to participate in European activities..
