Teacher training abroad - key to competence and success
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Teacher training abroad - key to competence and successLanguage training for teachers is essential to fulfill the internationalization requirements in the new curriculum. Merely mediocre language skills are not enough to meet all the requirements. English is a must for subjects like restaurant management, service design, business and service management as well as several interdisciplinary subjects. More and more, parts of teacher training (service design, food technology) are presented in English. It is necessary to have good English skills to be able to understand these presentations and to put them into practical use in lessons. Additionally, there has been a sharp rise in the numbers of our third year students who choose a foreign country for their obligatory internship. This also requires language skills for the project coordinators and teachers, as they need to communicate with the partner institutions in Europe. This means having good oral and writing skills in English, since communication needs to take place not only in oral conversations, but also by email. Also, good language skills are also needed for the supervision of the final theses in nutrition (4th and 5th year students). Good specialist literature and scientific studies are often only available in English. All students must sum up their final thesis in an abstract in English. Teachers need good language skills to counsel students and assess the papers. In the subject “looking after and advising guests” teachers communicate only in English in selected lessons (CLIL). They need good language skills to profit from English parts in teacher training. With great commitment the participants support and counsel the students who want to spend their obligatory internship abroad. For this, excellent professional and linguistic skills of teachers are required. Lessons in cuisine and service are implemented through the help of CLIL. (Content and language integrated learning). Internships abroad in the kitchen are becoming more and more popular. The importance of knowing about foods and beverages in English is growing. One participant is going to complete the course: "CLIL - Technology and Tools for Teachers working with CLIL" from 25. - 29. July 2016 in Malta. Two participants are are going to complete the course: "Tuscany Food and Wine" from 12. - 18. September 2016 and from 14. - 20. Mai 2017 in Sicily. For the above mentioned reasons the applicants want to improve their language skills and professional competence in summer 2016.In addition to an improvement in their language skills and professional competence the participants also expect personal development. The training will allow them to manage professional challenges more easily. Self confidence and motivation will be increased. Vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and flexibility of expression will be improved. Getting to know other cultures and specific features of different countries will lead to an increase in tolerance and mutual respect. The most important goal of the project is increasing language skills and professional competence . The training is supposed to improve self confidence in using the English language. Communication with institutions in Europe will be improved and facilitated. On a longer term, the participants want to establish partnerships with other schools for professional and cultural exchange and form international contacts.
