Teach Parents Emotional Intelligence
Start date: Jan 1, 2013,

The issue of parenting support has been gaining in proeminence at EU level since 2007, when the German EU Presidency suggested forming a European Federation of Parents. There are many key elements to the policy and institutional framework at EU level. One is the focus on early years’ provision which was a strong theme under the Lisbon Strategy. Under the Belgian Presidency in 2010, a Ministerial Declaration was adopted calling for more and better early years services and a European Commission Communication on early childhood education and care was adopted in February of 2011. Following a comparative analysis of their national strategies and programmes, partners of the project identified a common educational challenge which showed a lack of support for parents in providing adequate education to their children, and especially a lack of knowledge and skills for developing emotional intelligence abilities to their children. Considering the psychology studies which show that pre-school experience has a decisive impact on the architecture of brain and the competencies as an adult, the project aims at empowering parents having pre-school children (aged 3-6) with the skills necessary for providing education based on the emotional intelligence concept. Based on a participative methodology, the project will develop innovative ICT based training and practices to enhance the application of emotional intelligence between parents and their children. The project has the potential to contribute to all aspects of Europe 2020’ smart growth as it will develop means of strengthening knowledge through high quality education, innovation and digital society. Europe 2020 has two guidelines that directly or indirectly call to mind the role of support for parenting which the project will address: guideline 9 on preventing school drop-out and guideline 10 on reducing the numbers of people in poverty and social exclusion.
