Agriculture was, and still is, the main component of the rural landscape: in Europe, agriculture, together with forests, takes up about 3/4 of the territory. In this sense, it plays a major role in the maintenance or improvement of the quality of the environment. Since the implementation of the Nitrates Directive (91/676) in 1991, the water quality has not significantly improved. In the cross-border area, for example, agricultural practices have hardly evolved: if point pollution on livestock farms is dropping off, diffuse contamination, in particular the contamination due to over-fertilisation, is more difficult to control. This project aims to reduce the amount of nitrogen thanks to more reasonable fertilisation practices so as to reduce the loss of nitrogen into the air and surface water. The project therefore fits in a sustainablenatural resource management.
