In the 6th Environmental Action Programme (2002-2006), a Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment was defined as a priority action. The strategy aims at improving the quality of the urban environment. The proposed project aims at promoting the concept and practice of urban sustainable development through training on basic environmental issues, thus encouraging the local authorities (in particular of the new Member States) to get involved and create their own action plans. It will create an e- training tool and supporting material, directed towards town municipalities functionaries and policy makers, which will include information, examples and case studies on the priority themes set in the Communication "Towards a Thematic Strategy on the Urban Environment" [COM(2004)60].
