Supermom Kick-off 2010

The 20th Century was characterized by fundamental changes in the family structure. As a result the proportion of single parent households increased considerably. Unemployment among lone parents is, for various reasons, significantly higher than for parents who live together as a couple. In Europe, as almost everywhere in the world, single parents belong to the population group with the highest risk of poverty and hence they are strongly threatened by social exclusion. Therefore, customized solutions are needed. In order to really understand the issues facing lone parents and to find solutions, it is important to consider both the increasing and alarming figures regarding unemployment and poverty among single parents and also the specific living situations of individual lone parent families. The completed Supermom project offered a practical approach in which the abstract group “single parents” became personalized, which led to a better understanding of the difficulties they have to deal with. The results have been: - Increased competences of the participants: Professional as well as personal and social skills - Increased self-esteem, both through self-reflection in the workshops and by gaining a new perspective on their own lives through the camera - Improved chances in the labor market - Stimulation of a constructive debate concerning the topic “Single parents in Europe” with the help of the film as one of the final products.
