In the era of social media and constant access to internet the concept of ‘socialising’ has changed dramatically. It is no longer sufficient to meet in person and discuss current issues face to face with a couple of people. Nowadays, if you want to have your voice heard, you need to create networks, manage contacts, display content and most importantly – be social in the social media.
The training course ‘Super Social’ gathered 27 youth workers from 9 countries to work together towards better understanding of the mechanisms of social media and their use in the youth work. During the 6 days of training we focused issues related to communication and promotion, including one the biggest phenomena of modern advertisement and co-working – gamification – and then expanded it over all of the aspects of the youth work that are related to promotion and engagement of young people. During the training participants had a chance to create social campaigns and strategies that introduced innovative aspects of role play, games, photo and video both in social media and in the space and environment of their communities. Participants developed skills in using tools crucial both for NGO and business sector, such as: design thinking, project management, visualization, use of games, photo and videography. The final outcome of the project was creation of innovative and interactive social campaigns that can raise awareness on the social issues among international public and have a potential to enable youth workers to engage young people in their activities more effectively.
As the result of the training course young people may abandon the stereotypical understanding of the ‘social’ aspect of the new media. Instead, they can use their newly gained knowledge and skills to develop strategies and methods that can engage youth not only in the form of ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ on their websites but as active participants and ambassadors of their work.
