SubArcheo - New Technologies for the Training of Underwater Archaeologists
The project will develop, pilot and introduce, new distance-learning methodologies and materials for the training of Underwater Archaeologists and Underwater Archaeologist Tourism Guides in coastal areas around the Mediterranean. It will further initiate a process for the recognition of certification by the world diving organisations PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and CMAS (World Confederation of Sub-aquatic Activity). The system will foster the development of courses able to facilitate the re-skilling of fishermen threatened with unemployment whilst also supporting the protection of social and cultural heritage. The main products will be, for each targeted occupation, a curriculum, training methodology and learning package including manuals, tests, videos, 3D simulation and CD-Rom. These tools will be piloted, evaluated and where appropriate adapted with final versions being made freely available via the project website. The pilot phase plans to involve 25 trainees across the 4 participating countries. Additionally, a 3D simulation (virtual tour) will be created by the pilot trainees for the areas of Port Julius (Italy) and Troia (Portugal). The end results of the project expect to be considered for certification in the participating countries. Dissemination will involve web marketing, the distribution of demonstration versions of the training materials and the publicising of the project results (in relevant journals and at seminars, conferences and exhibitions). The overall aim being to encourage wide-ranging take-up of the training system, not only in the participating partner countries but across Europe, for this partners intend to make all project results freely available on the internet.
