The concept of this project proposal is based on the notion that integrating landscape management into a multi-functional, sustainable planning and management of the existing natural environment will transform tourism both in Garmen (Bulgaria) and Thassos (Greece) into a vehicle for protecting and promoting the abundant local natural, historical and cultural assets. Both municipalities share common challenges in local development. The current tourist activity in the region in no way corresponds with the remarkable natural and man-made resources in the area. The partnering municipalities share common problems related to biodiversity and environment protection which are caused by short-sighted management and over-exploitation of natural resources in the past. The economic development in the region presents many differences in the quality of life, which can be witnessedat all levels of life. Expected Results: 1) Created preconditions for the preservation of the cultural, historic heritage in Garmen and Thassos by the creation of the unique Historic Landscape Park in Garmen, Bulgaria and the elaboration of 3 Eco paths in Thassos, Greece that will enhance the attractiveness of existing itineraries2) Conducted thorough research of the possibilities for further development of local landscapes and advancement of sustainability principles in local development3) The cultural, historical and traditional heritage in the cross border area Garmen - Thassos will be promoted by elaboration of multilingual informational materials4) The cultural and historical heritage will be popularized among the residents of the two partnering municipalities5) Cultural cooperation will be stimulated through the organization of joint informational events
