Strategy Development for SMEs in Collaborative Cluster

The project will develop a complete training 'toolkit' to improve the competencies of owners and managers of SMEs, with regard to their entrepreneurial skills, in an effort to enhance their companies' economic growth and competitiveness. The project will address the needs of individual SMEs and clusters of SMEs. The project 'toolkit' will enable managers/owners of SMEs to analyse their capabilities and identify areas for improvement. Regional development agencies will also be involved in assessing the capabilities of local SME clusters and in making strategic support decisions for these clusters based upon these assessments. The project will address a number of key steps in an effort to realise the potential growth of individual SMEs/SME clusters. A review of prior research in this area will be undertaken and used to inform the project's training 'toolkit'. The project 'toolkit' will include innovative educational materials tailored to the learning needs and constraints of managers/owners of SMEs. 'Toolkit' learning modules will typically include, for example, 'understanding how companies compete', and 'defining competencies'. Delivery of the 'toolkit' training package will be primarily face-to-face, with web-based support. The 'toolkit' will be developed and piloted on existing SME clusters in Ireland and Scotland. The refined prototype toolkit will be further tested in the remaining partner countries and in the languages of each country. Project results will be made available in paper-based and electronic (web-based) formats. Accreditation for the project toolkit/programme will initially be sought by project partners in Ireland and Scotland with later accreditation being sought in the remaining partner countries and at EU level. Dissemination is key to the project and will be aimed at SMEs in general.
