PROJECT
FINISHED
The idea for this seminar was to provide opportunities for youth organizations to explore deeper the participation of LGBT young people in their projects, communities and wider Europe. To explore the challenges and obstacles for LGBT young people and to plan concrete actions to help overcome these obstacles. In Sept 2014 - The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on combating violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity - a critically important achievement for upholding the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The idea for this training came about through our involvement in various trainings for youth workers and our efforts to communicate an open environment for LGBT participants by hanging a ‘rainbow’ flag at the venue thereby communicating an openness and acceptance of diversity. At these training people identified as being LGBT and expressed their journey in life as a LGBT individual. In all of the cases the participants expressed challenges that they have had in life. Through this expression the idea built up in Eolas Soileir to host a training/seminar that explored these challenges in more detail and allowed for youth organizations to have the space to learn more about the issues of the LGBT community and provide a space to find partners to organize their own projects.
The objectives of the project are :
1) For participants to learn more about the issues and challenges of LGBT young people.
2) To share this learning with their projects upon their return to their home country.
3) To explore new approaches in inclusive practices specifically in relation to LGBT.
4) To search for new way to eliminate discrimination.
5) To develop new educational projects involving LGBT youth.
6) To explore the idea of organizing local, national and international activities on discrimination of LGBT that also involves other minority groups.
7) To share in the knowledge, skills and experiences of LGBT organisations already on the ground.
8) To learn how to expand awareness about LGBT among young people in your locality.
9) To explore the Erasmus+ programme in greater detail.
10) To provide a space for partnership building for future Erasmus+ projects.
We will host 18 participants from 15 projects and from 12 different countries. There was a huge response to our ‘call for partners’ for this project and rather than narrow the countries down to a smaller amount we decided to accept nearly all projects who wanted to participate and limit the number of participants to 1 person per organization. We believe this gives a wider scope to the activity with the maximum opportunity of finding partners to develop projects with and also to hear the experiences of a wide variety of countries and organisations particularly countries from Eastern partner window.
The projects are also very varied with youth organisations attending who have said (Lithuanian partner) ‘Our institution has never been dealing with LGBT questions before, but we would like to expand awareness about LGBT among young people in our local environment, so your Partnership building activity on LGBT issues would be a great chance for us.’ coupled with more experienced organisations such as pink Armenia who said ‘Those who take part in the project can definitely share they experience at pink Armenia, as every week there are events, and young LGBT people discuss things that bother them, things they get motivated with and/or want to share with other community members. Also, the project can create a great opportunity for representatives of the organization during the project to cooperate in future with other ideas.’ We have partnered with the Irish youth organisation ‘Dundalk outcomers’ to send a participant that can communicate the Irish context and build connections with European partners.
The activities will include teambuilding, creative ways of exploring the challenges faced by minority groups for example ‘Forum theatre’, World café, exploring our comfort zones, partnership building activities and an Erasmus+ workshop.
The methodologies we will use will be creative, inclusive and participatory.
The results will be deeper knowledge of the challenges and obstacles facing LGBT young people and how to overcome these challenges. We will explore dissemination plans for the local community e.g. talks, radio interviews etc, also dissemination plans for the projects websites. The result will be concrete plans for local interventions / projects that explore the issues in a local context and concrete plans for future co-operation in international projects.
Impact will be more inclusive youth work for the organisations.
Long-term benefits will be the implementation of inclusive strategies to tackle discrimination and for a more inclusive Europe.
