SOFT SKILLS EDUCATION IN INITIAL VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Today’s competitive job market means that minimum acceptable skills are being replaced with higher standards. And among the higher standards are what many call “soft skills.” A soft skill refers to the cluster of personality traits, social graces, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that mark each of us to varying degrees. Persons who rank high in this cluster, with good soft skills, are generally the people that most employers want to hire. Soft skills complement hard skills, which are the technical requirements of a job.Students of Initial Vocational Training learn the technical skills in someway. Much more than teaching technical skills, we have to worry about teaching them how to show up their skills on time, how to work in teams and how to take the supervision of their skills. We believe that there is no use of the technical skills which can’t be shown up by the graduates of VET so that we will focus on soft skills with this project. Students of Initial Vocational Training, are the target groups of this project. Products (soft skills training DVDs) of the project entitled “Competencies for Labour Market”realized in Czech Republic will be transferred, translated in TUR, ITA and GRE, will be adapted to Turkish, Italian and Greek VET systems and will be disseminated in partner countries. In order to assess the needs for soft skills indicated by the employers in partner countries, professional organizations from Turkey, Czech Republic, Greece and Italy will execute a general research among the target groups. After the research phase, experts representing the partner countries will discuss the results in order to adapt the products. Then partnership will design soft skills training DVDs containing videos, audios and animations in TUR, GRE and ITA. Students will be able to control their own learning speed and learning level as well as assessing themselves. Trainers will also be trained and certificated so as to guide and assist the students during their learning activities. By means of key to future project, we want to transfer multimedia training DVDs which will be used for teaching soft skills to Initial Vocational Training students aged between 14 and 18. Having used the interactive training tools, students will be able to learn the most common and desired social attributes (soft skills) indicated by the employers before entering working life. Employers will also have the opportunity to find employees in accordance with their expectations. In long term, results of the project will lessen in-service education costs of the employers. This project will contribute to the endeavors aiming at increasing the number of qualified work force with 21st Century Skills. Partnership will execute pilot applications so as to reach the desired quality in the products. A dedicated website in all partner languages will also be designed.
