Situated Mobile Language Learning
Start date: Nov 1, 2010,

Mobile devices - personal, portable, multimedia, ubiquitous, connected - have the potential to transform many aspects of learning. Language learning provides a prime testbed for mobile learning. It is widely acknowledged that learning about the language and culture of another country is most effective in-situ, yet no technologies currently support learners' informal situated learning while in a target language country. The project aims to take advantage of this gap by developing a collaborative mobile tool for learners to capture and share items of linguistic and cultural interest. Based on previous research with international students in the UK, the project explores the model on a European level with two different types of language learners, EU mobility students (Erasmus) and adult migrants (Grundtvig). Drawing on key ideas of situated cognition, user-created content and collaborative learning, the project will develop a mobile and web-based application, with related pedagogies and practices for effective use of the system in different contexts. We will carry out field evaluation studies in six countries, develop practical guides and policy recommendations and disseminate results to foster adoption of the system through integration with relevant networks and initiatives supporting in-situ language learners. Project outputs will be provided in the six languages of the project's demonstrator sites. The main areas of impact include: 1) providing detached adult learners with a community of fellow learners, 2) making European mobility programmes more effective by changing the way learners leverage in-situ learning, 3) providing practitioners in the sector with a technological platform and related pedagogies, practices and guidelines to enrich their language teaching, and 4) extending Europe's lead in m-learning by exploring a new application and adding to the knowledge base from previous European m-learning projects.
