This project focuses on vocational practices in the Shetland Islands, Scotland, Voss and Norway, and stems from the view that international learning can increase the quality of young people's education in general and in particular in relation to vocational training. It is hoped that the project will lead to increased recruitment in vocational training subjects. The project is anchored in the mobility aims of the Erasmus+ programme and the broader objectives, priorities and principles of the European Union.As the third application in vocational training involving Shetland College UHI, this project aims to involve up to 16 participants undertaking VET. The trainees will be drawn from five fields of vocational training - CREATIVE INDUSTRIES, HEALTH & CARE, DIGITAL MEDIA, BUSINESS & HOSPITALITY and CONSTRUCTION. This application is the outcome of close collaboration between staff at Shetland College UHI, Shetland Islands Council and a Norwegian consortium led by Voss Vidaregaande Skule. Our receiving partner is a consortium of VET schools with a strong track record of making effective links with workplaces in Norway.For all trainees, the focus will be on applying and learning new skills vital for training and future employability. This application makes provision for eight students to undertake two mobilities, each lasting four weeks - one in spring 2016 and one in spring 2017. The duration of the placement is best-suited to the structure of Shetland College UHI courses and will allow participants to make the most of their time abroad. Language and cultural preparations are an integral part of this application. An accompanying person will travel with students to Voss, and another will collect them at the end of the mobility. The partnership between Shetland College UHI and Voss Vidaregaande Skule has existed for four years and has seen successful Leonardo da Vinci mobilities run each spring between 2012 and 2014 - another is planned for 2015. The partnership has been tremendously rewarding for both organisations thus far; there is much they can learn from each other. The Shetland Islands Council Global Citizenship service has worked in close collaboration with the applicant organisation in preparing this project proposal. The Shetland Islands need to promote excellence if such a remote island community is to survive and sustain a thriving economy, and vocational training is central to creating and sustaining employment, whilst meeting national government objectives.It is invaluable for young people to feel they are able to compete and contribute to an international labour market. Taking part in the practical experience outlined in this application will be important in this regard by the enhancement of transferable skills. It will also help broaden minds and perspectives of young people who otherwise might not feel confident and/or capable of stepping outwards from their own island community. This application reflects a strong desire to be inclusive of all types of education, offering Shetland students, undertaking VET, the opportunity to gain first-hand experience out with their own community. This experience, in addition to the boost in self-reliance which accompanies any international education venture, will provide participants with new perspectives on their chosen field of study and enhance their professional understanding and employability skills. This application aims to ensure participants are creative, adaptable, problem-solving future citizens. This application builds on a commitment to offer mobility and increase the quality of vocational training within key sectors in a small island community.
