The updating training project of Helsinki Media Upper Secondary entitled ‘Sharing, Learning and Creating Methods and Media Competences for Future Education’ aims at developing the skills of our teaching staff in accordance with the strategic areas of focus and the development plan for the teaching staff of the city of Helsinki. Our school is a pioneer in providing media education and utilizing modern technology in education. However, changes in society and education are challenging teachers to develop and update their skills in various ways in future on international and national levels. The objective of the project is to develop teaching methods, media education and international co-operation in order to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they will need in further education and working life. Furthermore, the project seeks to improve the teachers’ skills to integrate information and communications technology into their teaching. They will also enhance their competence of online pedagogy and how to teach media literacy in class. With regard to international co-operation, the focus is on establishing contacts with European colleagues, enabling the teachers to provide international education and through their own updating training to increase awareness of the main themes of international education. A further objective is to strengthen the co-operation our European co-operation so that our teachers will have the opportunity to share their skills with their European colleagues. The project includes one job shadowing and 14 updating training courses taken by as many teachers. The teachers represent different subjects with six language teachers, four humanities and sciences teachers, two art and media education teachers and two mathematics teachers. The needs of all teachers are similar; to update their expertise to suit the increasing demands on teaching. In accordance with the plan teachers representing different subjects will take updating training courses or language courses in Europe. The courses aim at developing teaching methods, media education and international co-operation. On the courses the teachers will network and look for new partner schools. Furthermore, the courses give the participants a chance to study and develop new teaching methods in interaction with European colleagues and to take home the new materials to be used in their organization. In job shadowing the teacher observes everyday school life in a German school with regard to developing teaching in our school in keeping with the relevant themes mentioned earlier. These themes include German language and literature, different teaching methods, student participation, media education, online pedagogy and information and communications technology. In addition, the teacher will be interested in ascertaining how communication is organized in a German school and how the school is networking nationally and internationally. The expertise of every teacher participating in the courses will be improved by the training. The teachers’ ability to use modern technology and new teaching methods will improve and become more versatile. The teachers’ media knowhow will also develop and as a result the use of the media in teaching will become more common in accordance with the objectives of Helsinki Media Upper Secondary. The increased language proficiency and international experience will encourage teachers to include international themes in teaching and to participate in carrying out international projects. As regards the whole school, the positive effects of the training will manifest themselves in more lively and versatile international co-operation which will involve teachers from different subjects. As teachers will be sharing their newly acquired skills within the school, the ability of the whole teaching staff to use modern technology in teaching and their overall pedagogical competence will improve. In addition, the teachers will be more prepared to meet the changes encoded in the curriculum and especially to acquaint themselves with the new digital tests to be shortly introduced in the Matriculation Exams. The implementation of the international co-operation plan will be facilitated by international training. The school will benefit by the new networking, because it is only through sharing practices and knowledge that we ourselves can learn more. In the future, Helsinki Media Upper Secondary will be able to share its media expertise in a European network.
