Servicedesign (ServiceD)
Start date: Aug 31, 2009, End date: Jul 31, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

Servicedesign project is based on the four key issues around competence of design: foresight, communication, training and collaboration/commercialization of the results in the participating companies. The am. issues are built in as work packages of the project. Servicedesign project has been created to upgrade service design knowledge in the Southern Finland and Estonia. The project partners will be Lahti University of Applied Sciences (LUAS) as a Lead partner and Estonian Institute for Future Studies (ETI) as a project partner. The need for the project generation has arisen because of the globally and especially in Europe rapidly crowing service sector. By this project Finland and Estonia will both have an opportunity to lead the development path in the service design field. The main goal of this project is to engender permanent co-operation forums and concepts for this new knowledge – service design – business, innovation and R & D. The new knowledge will be created in collaboration that will be realized in the forms of Servicedesign – online platform, multimedia book, Servicedesign –events, training module and keen involvement of the companies from the Southern Finland and Estonia. Project activities are based on the social media utilisation (Servicedesign – Online Platform). The achieved research results, training, events and publications are linked in this platform in a tangible way. The platform operates like project archive and generation tool, gathering results and actions as online. The project is also linked to the European Network of Living Labs (Lahti Living Lab). The Servicedesign project has a strong future orientation: foresight research will include an analysis of the evolution of service design knowledge and gives an interpretation for the practical implementation. These results will be exploited in the service design processes with selected companies in the programme area. As a continuation of the research results a new training module will be developed and piloted by LUAS. This new training module will have the cross-discipline thinking and has approach of collaboration with key stakeholders. The module will bring the fresh view for the design sector. A key value of the project is a passage from tangible to intangible design and a launch of new type of methods. The project aims at being a pioneer to make cross-border economics in design sector possible to engender and social media utilisation which the activities of the project creates during the implementation. Achievements: ServiceD established an international pioneer position for the Central Baltic area in the service design field starting through a Finnish-Estonian partnership. Service design is the activity of planning and organising people, infrastructure, communication and material components of a service in order to improve its quality, the interaction between the service provider and customers, and the customer's own experience. The project took the first steps in commercialising the project results within the participating companies and launched a new concept to combine foresight and innovation generation in the service design field. The project developed a Service Design Online Platform on which professionals and newcomers of the service design field can connect. The partners also developed educational modules and new curricula for higher education degree programmes and tested them in one school.
