servation and Enhancement of Folk Culture Heritage in Central Europe (ETNOFOLK)
Start date: Apr 30, 2011, End date: Apr 29, 2014 PROJECT  FINISHED

The folk culture with its centuries of old tradition in the regions of Central Europe, extremely rich in forms and genres, not only represents one of the keystones of our cultural identity but also offers substantial potential for sustainable socio-economic development of the regions. The idea of creating common knowledge base for research of relations and influences of folk cultures and traditions within countries of Central Europe dates back to the era after World War 2. Unfortunately the division of Europe into so called Eastern and Western blocks significantly delayed realisation of these ideas for many years. Instead, national projects such as research of Slavonic countries or Carpathian Commission were established. After 1989 the conditions changed and doors to create such a complex base which could introduce the traditional face of Central Europe and mutual historical influences has opened.Since 1989 number of partial common projects has been realized, most of them only bilateral. No complex international project covering broader geographic area has been carried out so far. Based on this experience, the idea of the international project covering more countries of the Central European region has evolved. ETNOFOLK project therefore would be the first extensive project covering more countries of the region exploitable by the public, tourism industry and public administration, allowing exchange and comparison of information and establishment of new relations. The project aims to utilise most up-to-date web based technologies for exploitation of these existing but so far weakly used resources. Achievements: CENTRAL EUROPE project ETNOFOLK aims to present Central European folk cultural heritage coming from 4 countries in the digitized form through single access point – ETNOFOLK portal (www.etnofolk.eu). The portal contains various types of content such as pictures, audio, video and text accompanied by rich background information and additional services allowing exploitation of the aggregated digital content. The project proceeded well during the fourth reporting period and some remarkable results have been delivered by April 2013. Betaversion of the ETNOFOLK portal was developed consisting of 2 relatively independent but closely interlinked sections – the knowledge base containing mostly the digitized scientific content originating in archives of the project content partners and the “living” part of the portal providing information about ongoing events, articles, videos, services and other features. The betaversion was made available for testing in spring 2013. Initial tests performed by the partners and technical coordinator resulted in number of modifications of portal features such as map search, filtering and many others. Routine cooperation of the portal and distributed data repositories started. Digital content created by the local experts has been harvested in regular intervals and automatically made available on ETNOFOLK portal. The ways of cooperation with each partner have been fine tuned so that the processing of the digital content runs smoothly. More than 2600 records were harvested from the local repositories and published. Training in data and metadata creation was organised in Hungary. The main purpose of the training was to teach the experts in the field of ethnology how to create EEF (Etnofolk Exchange Format) conformant valid digital records. The tasks carried out in the field of strategies for utilization of cultural heritage proceeded well too. Project partners collected good and bad practices on the utilisation of folk culture heritage. All partners participated in many events, and collected and documented practices that will be used for the analysis and the toolkit of good practices. The partners also collected information about legal conditions for folk culture heritage preservation in each country. These inputs will be used for comparative analysis in the next period. Last but not least, the small scientific conference with the topic “Traditional Food” was organized by project partners in Budapest on 19th of April 2013 with 28 participants. The partners also performed number of other activities promoting the project via various media.
