The project offered the opportunity for two teaching staff to take part in a 6 day Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) training course in Spain. The staff that attended were a Spanish Language teacher and SERC's Teacher Tutor who works closely with the College's trainee teachers to think deeply about their current practices and consider new strategies that will promote 21st century learning. The project proposed to offer invaluable pedagogical training to the staff in order to update them on methodologies and practices within teaching. It addressed the needs of the staff to gain knowledge and skills in the topic which has been taken back and implemented in the classroom to have an affect on students. Participants took part in an organised training activity with an experienced European provider. The project objectives were to: * Provide the staff with development in their subject area, building on their skills and learning new methods and techniques * Provide knowledge of practices within other European countries * Develop the participants personal and professional skills * Introduce them to another culture and language * Contribute to the internationalisation of the College and increase network of European contacts As part of the group the participants took part in the following activities: * Introduction to the didactic application of games and the CLIL method * Exploration of the practical applications for teaching both language and content * Received presentation on use of games to drive the learning process * Workshop on good practice in team building and group presentations * Physical game playing - evaluation and performance games * Seminar on creative learning, competition and motivation, models of games and structures to stimulate peer to peer learning, the practical problems of game playing, testing tools, self-assessment and working with technology * Cultural programme on Canary history and daily life, showcase of participants' educational and cultural background * Daily review to reinforce learning Impact of the training: * Professional competences in the use of CLIL * Best practice gained in language teaching for adult learners through course content and by learning from other participants * Access to a network of like-minded specialist teachers using CLIL * Enhanced cultural awareness * Development of personal and employability skills such as team working, creative thinking, problem solving and communication through the delivery methods of the course such as group working and presentations * Increased confidence in classroom delivery * Contribution to the College's main objectives as set out in the College Development Plan - "To improve the quality and relevance of education and training by providing a curriculum that will inspire, transform and enrich" * A working relationship with the training provider * Contribution to the awarding of the highest inspection grade in an ETI inspection on CPD in March 2015. It was noted that ?The development of Erasmus ? brought tangible benefits for the curriculum?. It is too early at this stage but longer term benefits are anticipated with improvement in student retention and performance in the language courses.
