Semantic pathways for building a spatially-thinking society
Start date: Dec 1, 2013,
The GEOTHNK project focuses on spatial thinking, a newly acknowledged ability with profound and rewarding effects on numerous aspects of everyday life and science - from giving and following directions and interpreting maps and diagrams, to achieving innovation in STEM disciplines. Spatial thinking constitutes a key competence for life and work in the 21st century and is therefore an essential component of European educational and training activities. GEOTHNK aims at enhancing geospatial thinking skills and engaging users in meaningful, inquiry-based learning experiences. The main outcomes of the project are: 1) the develpment of a methodological approach for the interdisciplinary organisation and semantic linkage of knowledge; 2) an innovative ICT-based approach and an open, collaborative, web-based learning environment to facilitate the piloting of the proposed approach with user communities. The web-based educational environment, the scenarios and the support material will be developed in 6 languages: Bulgarian, Dutch, English, German, Greek, and Romanian. Regarding its impact, the GEOTHNK approach will support learners (school and university students, and adult learners) to apply spatial thinking and purposefully address spatial and other scientific concepts, across all curricular areas and at any developmental level. The development of the innovative, authoring environment will help teachers both at school and university level, as well as science centre instructors to design and present innovative, diverse learning pathways that interconnect formal and informal learning settings across different disciplines. The GEOTHNK approach will be integrated with a contextualised and social data framework which will help learners – the future “Spatial Citizens” - discover, discuss, and improve eLearning resources by also taking into account the characteristics of the intended learning context, as well as the actual usage/appraisal by the community.
