Seeyou@nature-project is multilateral youth exchange for young people in Finland, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, that was born in the seminar 'I Can Do It!' in Metsäkartano, Finland. The partnership between Metsäkartano in Finland and Welzijn Stede Broec – social-cultural centre ‘t Stadsplein in Netherlands started in 2013 as it became clear that both organizations are working on inclusion projects. In March 2014 the idea for this project was born on the seminar ‘I Can Do It!’ on inclusion of young people with disabilities, in Metsäkartano Finland. The project contained a preparatory visit and 2 youth exchanges during the year 2015. The youth exchanges targeted young people with fewer opportunties from both partners’ local networks and cooperation in 4 countries. It brought together 28 young people and their leaders for 2 separate events working in a natural environment on the topics of personal leadership, more specifically on identity, self-confidence and competence development. The topics and methodology were amended and specified to the needs and wishes of the young people in the preparation and application phase. The project was aimed to provide opportunities for young people to develop their personal competence, independence and self-awareness through intercultural exchange. This is how the objectives were reached: • We have involved, engaged and motivated young people to take part in new kinds of learning processes (youth exchanges) and learn together with others. The outcomes of this part were very succesfull. • We have created opportunities for intercultural exchange to happen amongst included and excluded and vulnerable young people. • We have provided possibilities for young people to learn more about opportunities to become international (i.e. European voluntary service) as a learning goal from local level meetings and the youth exchanges. • We have created a space where young people are encouraged to work on their personal leadership competences, their independence and their employability. Participants challenged themselves and dealt with fears. Topic of the youth exchanges was Personal leadership and empowerment. Working on this topic meant looking more into what people wanted themselves, finding their identity and see how they could be their own entrepreneurs, using their personal leadership to grow and to learn. Specifically we used nature as a learning environment. The topic allowed young people to have intra- en interpersonal development, they have worked on their independence and autonomy, they understand better which competences help them to learn and grow, and which competences they should develop more to develop further. We planned 3 activities : 1. Advanced planning visit in February where 5 leaders meet to prepare the youth exchange, taking in mind to make it useful as possible for the target group, make it inclusive 2. Youth exchange March: Look at the past and the present asking questions like: How did I become who I am?, what are my values? what is my identity? What is my reality/ my environment? 3. Youth exchange in July: Look at the future asking questions like: Where do I want to go? How can I change my life into what I want it to be? How can I take ownership and leadership over my life? Which competences do I need to develop in order to achieve that. The methods we used were based on experiential learning and nature as a learning environment. Nature provides new opportunities to take on challenges and work on autonomy and self reliance. The participants worked on the following competences @ plan and record learning, L2L, and awareness of competence development @ understand who they are, their identity and what they want @ transforming needs and ideas into actions. @ (re)discover their creativity and use it @ identify their leadership style and how to adapt it in certain circumstances @ intra-personal skills, like self-esteem and self confidence, as examples for the young people they work with @ ability to face challenges, so that they can reach their objectives in this new period of their lives @ reflective practice methods and enable them to become more conscious of their decision making processes The learners themselves, and responsible for accompanying learning processes, explicitly reflect the importance of the environment and necessary conditions to make learning an effective and participatory process.
