Second-language Competency for Technicians in Industry (Lang2Tech)

There is strong evidence that the supply of skilled technicians in Europe does not match the locations of demand for such workers. The most significant constraint on these technicians’ occupational mobility is absence of second-language competency. This derives from lack of opportunity or incentive for language-learning in technicians' education, training and work socialisation. That is the chief problem Lang2Tech addresses. Our consortium of partners includes language-teaching units at two universities, a national agent for Leonardo Mobility placements, an association of researchers specialising in European integration, a consultant on employee competences in industry, bio-medical research facility employing skilled laboratory technicians, the Scottish Lifelong Learning Directorate, and a national trades union. The consortium has tested innovative methods in supporting and validating second-language competence development in five languages. The partners have been active in promoting Lang2Tech and are seeking to license other organisations to award Lang2Tech Certification; the Lang2Tech lead partner, the project consortium is establishing a steering group to set up a European Foundation for the Promotion of Technician Language Learning and Mobility.
