SeaSide - Developing excellent cultural destinations in the southern Baltic area (SEASIDE)
Start date: Jun 30, 2008, End date: Jun 29, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

TTo overcome the times of the Cold War period & disparities among the cities & regions of the South Baltic area the project aims to emphasize & utilize the common maritime cultural heritage that binds the region together to create a common identity.Adjacent cities & regions shall become excellent tourism destinations based on common heritage. Maritime museums & festivals have the potential to act as ambassadors that bring the common maritime cultural heritage (traditional shipbuilding & sailing vessels, historic trade relations, fishery, navigation etc.) into peoples minds. The project idea is to highly utilize this potential by a more professional target-group orientation, promotion & cross-border cooperation. Attraction development of maritime festivals, a better utilization of the floating heritage & the establishment of a professional museum network of the South Baltic shall contribute to a positive image building. The network of sail cities & regions in the South Baltic will be enlarged & a common branding towards international markets enhanced. Tourism product development on maritime themes for international guests as well as professionalisation to welcome foreign tourists from bordering countries will be worked at. A joint exhibition onthe common maritime cultural heritage & cross-marketing campaigns to address cross-border target groups for an increased tourism flow within these countries will be implemented. Achievements: The museum partners of the project - Maritime Museum Rostock, the Polish Maritime Museum, the Swedish Naval Museum and the Lithuanian Sea Museum - collaborate for setting up an exhibition, which is one of a kind. The common travelling exhibition "1 Sea – 4 Stories" impressively presents four stories of Maritime Cultural Heritage in a common frame not only to characterize the common identity of the South Baltic area, but also to revive and awaken the interest of the different history. The exhibition started in July 2010 and travelled already to four locations of four countries - Rostock (Germany), Gdansk (Poland), Karlskrona (Sweden) and Klaipeda (Lithuania). Not onlyto promote the exhibition but also the museums themselves in the most proper way - partners have produced several marketing material, such as a common museum flyer presenting the 5 museums of the projects as well as exhibition posters, -flyers, -roll-ups. Moreover, the "Brabander", a schooner of the Klaipeda University, has participated as ambassador in 4 maritime events around the South Baltic in order to call attention to the Maritime Cultural Heritage reflected upon "1Sea - 4Stories". Maritime Museum DatabaseThe five SeaSide museums established a museum database containing exhibition highlights of the respective museum which mostly attract visitors. Primarily, the database is a promotion tool for maritime museums. Highlights of each museum are presented on a website www.baltic-maritime-museums.eu , which shall awaken interest to more potential visitors. Moreover, the database functions as a network tool for maritime museums, where maritime museums get closely connected to each other. The museum database can be extended by additional maritime museums with the effect of widening and strengthening the maritime museum network of the South Baltic area.
