Founded in 1944, the scientific “Liceo Francesco Vercelli” has been located in the present seat in Asti since 1975. It is a secondary school offering three different courses of study: one specializing in scientific subjects; one in applied sciences, and a third one specializing in sports . It is the only state scientific school in Asti and it has modern premises with updated facilities; it is an integral part of the SIRQ network and its quality is certified according to the UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 regulations; moreover, it is accredited for the Cambridge P.E.T. and F.C.E. exams and the European Computer Driving Licence, besides training students to different kinds of Olympic Games, such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Science, English and problem solving. The staff is made up of 61 teachers ( two of them are Deputy Headmasters and five are in charge of specific departments) , administrative staff and the Headmaster. At present there are 33 classes with students coming from all social strata who live in town or in the nearby villages; they all have a good grounding and are ready to face a demanding school experience. They are expected to achieve cognitive and social competences at the end of their secondary school, which will first of all enable them to continue their study career at university but also, if necessary, to enter the working world at the very end of their five- year- course. In recent years the school policy has been modified requiring different and innovative competences compared with the past and, consequently, a greater flexibility in the teaching and learning process: our students need more and more to acquire the learning- to- learn skills . For this reason the school has always been open to European projects and has carried out a scrupulous survey in order to identify the students’ needs, resulting in a higher knowledge and the use of new technology, alongside with new and modern teaching methods to enhance the teaching-learning quality (CLIL, cooperative learning, flipped classes) and in a higher application of key competences. Nine participants have been selected (1 Deputy Headmaster, 1 in charge of the computer science department, 6 teachers and the head of the administrative staff) who teach different subjects and who are also going to be the hallmark of the various courses of study: they are experienced teachers and they are highly motivated to make a change, to update and improve the present policy, in order to foster quality, educational success and internationalization. The courses they will attend are meant to complement the knowledge they already have with the necessary skills for an effective development in the future, in particular with regard to technological skills, the teaching of English language and literature, the Content and Language Integrated Learning and the school renewal with a better awareness of its management. Therefore these teachers will consolidate their professional profile improving at the same time the competence level of their students, who will be more involved in the learning process (inclusion techniques and CLIL methodology), more aware of their own choices and more actively responsible thanks to the implementation of innovative teaching methods. The transfer to the school community of good practices acquired during the courses, especially the ones to support innovation and to promote comparison and inclusion improving the competence level, will allow a larger involvement of all the teachers, while the managerial staff and the non-teaching staff will benefit from a management change due to new leadership techniques and to a more flexible organization, less tied to bureaucracy and more open to the stakeholders’ interests. The school web site, the spreading of the project results by means of social media and the lectures and seminars organized in cooperation with the local educational authority , will pave the way for future activities in keeping with the chosen ones and which can represent their natural evolution.
