Schools for resilience: linking schools with local communities' sustainability
Start date: Nov 1, 2013,

Climate change is one of the most challenging issues that the European Union has to make face in the coming years. Environmental education related to sustainability usually trends to adopt a conductist approach, in which students are not asked to think or create their own actions and disregards the role of the community and civil society to fight against climate change. This project aims to respond to two needs: 1) to introduce a new approach in environmental school education in which students will define the most adequate solutions to their local community and which fosters the sense of initiative, entrepreneurship and creativity and 2) to make a reality the 21st century school, being open to the outside world and problems that society faces, innovative in the use of new didactic methods and with a relevant learning and teaching regarding key social challenges. In this sense, the project aims to design a set of teaching materials (text book + teaching plan+ guide for adaptation to school/community context) aimed to approach environmental education from the point of view of community sustainability and resilience, using a holistic and comprehensive methodology as Place Based Learning. Within the teaching plan students will analyse community sustainability and resilience (Best practices in Europe) and will assess their local community on the aspect chosen (energy, food, waste or transport). They will develop then solutions to improve the sustainability and resilience of their community, as well as with an action plan and an assessment of the impact. The project will improve schools' relationship with the outside world, notably the local community and will allow to address relevant issues for society. Students will learn about the environmental challenges, as well as improving their attachment and understanding of their community. They will also develop skills and competences, , specially personal, social and environmental entrepreneurship and creativity.
