ESCU and its partners have identified that decision makers often try to improve education by law changes. However, they sometimes forget that one of the main factors for educational quality is not in the hands of the law, but in schools and teachers: the methods. Whereas other sectors change their techniques day by day, teaching methods evolve too slowly. Many teachers keep giving their lessons the same way they used to 50 years ago, and they are reluctant to implement innovations that pedagogy research finds out. New methods boost school students’ motivation, improve attention to diversity and help students to take the most advantage of their individual skills and they help in the reduction of early school leaving.Therefore, the Conference School Methods 2020 that will be held in Tallin (Estonia), from the 31st October to the 6th November 2016 (including travel days), will bring 45 young people (from 16-19 years old) active in school student unions from all over Europe aims at promoting the implementation of innovative teaching methods at schools, at analysing the existing experiences and the benefits that it can bring at national and European level, from the students perspective. The specific objectives will include:To share and compare the different teaching methods used all over Europe, from the students perspective;To explore the impact innovative teaching methods have in the motivation, academic results and acquisition of competences by school students; and the benefits in relation with social inclusion in education and the reduction of early school leaving;To explore the strategic frameworks ET2020 and Europe 2020, and the role innovative teaching methods can have to reach the strategic objectives;To facilitate direct dialogue of school students with policy makers on the topics explored during the conference;To produce recommendations for and with decision-makers to promote the introduction of innovative teaching methods.Using various non-formal learning methods, the participants will look into the topic of the conference and in the end create recommendations which can be used at a later stage to advocate at local and national level for the inclusion of innovative teaching methods in schools.In the long run, we aim that decision-makers all over Europe will promote the introduction of innovative teaching methods in schools to increase social inclusion in the educational systems and to reduce early school leaving.
