Karttimos border guard station, located in the village of Ruhtinansalmi in Suomussalmi municipality, was built in 1957 and partly renovated in 1984. Th e condition and the building technology no longer met current requirements. In addition, changes in border guard operations and organisation had also created a need for change in the operational facilities. Th e intention of the project was to improve the infrastructure of Karttimos border crossing point and its associated maintenance infrastructure. Th e project was to completely remodel the Karttimo border guard station and the associated border crossing point. 50 percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 percent from the Finnish Border Guard. Achievements: The project first created architectural, structural, electrical and plumbing plans and then selected the contractors and border guard station cabling contractors through a competitive bidding process. As part of the project the electric and data connection cabling between the guard station and the border station was completed, the guard station roofing was renewed, exterior siding and additional heat insulation were installed, social facilities were completed, and a waste-water absorption field was constructed. The Karttimo temporary border crossing point is closed for the time being, mainly because of the light traffic volume, but the guard station itself is functioning normally.
