Reinforcement of technical ways to fight against the pollution from the shipwreck of PRESTIGE. Balance and perspectives of transnational cooperation in the fight against pollutions in the Bay of Biscay. (PRESTIGE)
Start date: Nov 19, 2002, End date: Oct 29, 2005 PROJECT  FINISHED

Achievements: - Protection against pollution through hydrocarbons in the Spanish rias by installing floating dams - Waste collection at sea using specialised ships in the fight against pollution, chartered by the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture: 54,000 tonnes of waste have been recovered at sea, of which approximately 40 % is pure fuel oil. - The eventual cleaning of the whole Aquitaine coastline. By end 2005, there were no more waste products on the Aquitaine coastline and all the waste had been incinerated in specialised centres. - Total elimination of waste picked up on the beaches and at sea: the techniques used made it possible to collect about 109,000 tonnes of waste products soiled by hydrocarbon pellets. - Seminar on the management of the crisis centre and proposals for improving the methods for fighting pollution (80 participants from the 4 countries in the Atlantic Area).
