The aim of the REDINTER network – Rede Europeia de Intercompreensão - is tofederate the majority of European institutions either currently or previously working inthe field of mutual understanding, with the following objectives:a. developing and fostering the consideration of policies to promote mutualunderstanding (within and between the different families of languages, andbetween unrelated languages) to sustain linguistic diversity in Europe andmultiple learning of languages at different levels: school and universitystudents, lifelong learning programmes (in-house training, adult learning),initial and ongoing teacher training, bilingual teaching contexts, self-learning…;b. identifying and assessing all initiatives that are aiming (or have aimed) tofoster mutual understanding, and their impact on the ground;c. gathering, processing and spreading information on best practices in this fieldto encourage multilingual learning and foster the creation of learningenvironments that lend themselves to linguistic diversity, especially throughthe effective use of technology;d. gathering, exchanging and implementing best practices on the development ofmutual understanding processes among learners with specific needs(immigrants, illiterate people, etc.).The products envisaged comprise reports and recommendations, distribution of existingmaterials through the network's web site, setting up projects, training in all the countriesof the network and academic publications (including a special REDINTER review onpaper and on-line).We plan to be able to work together on the educational policies of the various partnercountries and to spread the specific applications of the concept of mutual understandingwidely within teacher training, classroom practices (at school, university, professionalteaching and adult education levels) or within informal language learning.
