Real time, quantified insight into the environmental performance of ships (Clean Shipping Index)
Start date: Dec 31, 2010, End date: Dec 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Cargo owners increasingly influence the logistic chains for their goods. The drivers are efficiency and costs, but also reliability and sustainability. In the Clean Shipping Index database ships and ship owners are ranked in accordance with their environmental performance. In order to minimize their corporate environmental footprints, cargo owners may use the information from the Clean Shipping Index during the procurement of sea transport. Achievements: The project has already close to 50 shipping companies involved and nearly 2000 vessels are indexed. The intention is to expand the cargo owner network and attract more shipping companies and simultaneously extend the concept to other parts of Europe with a view to becoming a self-sustaining organisation in 3-5 years. It is a user friendly and comprehensive tool which is used by leading international cargo owners to evaluate the environmental performance of their providers of sea transport. The index offers environmental ranking for ships and entire carriers based on their performances in five different areas. Ships and carriers are evaluated based on levels of emission of Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Sulphur Oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM). The index also includes use of chemicals, how carriers take care of their wastes on board, and how they treat different discharges to water, such as sewage and ballast water. Overall CO2 reduction targets and whether or not ship owners have a sound recycling policy is also asked for. To use a source of information based on common methods is of course vital to be able to, in a credible way, measure and compare the environmental performance of different ships and carriers. Clean Shipping Index provides the most holistic and qualitative environmental index of its kind and constitute an indispensable tool for cargo owners intending to diminish their own environmental footprints from transportations. Undoubtedly, the index is also a way for high quality ship owners to gain competitive advantage by being transparent on environmental performance and to show their ambitions for healthier oceans and cleaner air. Clean Shipping Index increases the demand for quality ship operators. A win-win situation is created for cargo owners, high-performing carriers and, most importantly, the environment itself.
