Qualitätsmanagement im Unternehmen - ein inklusives Projekt mit hörenden und hörgeschädigten Auszubildenden
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The objective of „Quality management in companies – an inclusive project with hearing and hearing impaired trainees” is to organize a 5 week work placement for trainees of Robert-Schmidt-Berufskolleg (RSIBK) and Rheinisch-Westfälisches Berufskolleg für Hörgeschädigte (RWB, college for the hearing impaired). Both vocational colleges are located in Essen. All participants are in initial vocational training in the German dual system. Participants from RSIBK are trained to work in occupations related to business and administration. RWB, that trains students from all over Germany, additionally trains in industrial occupations. During the 5 weeks the participants do a work placement in a company. Simultaneously they work on a project task about QM and thus enhance their job skills, improve their command of a foreign language, become more communicative. Last but now least by working with a webbased learning platform they also gain experience in virtual project work. Our receiving partners are Etelä Kymenlaakson ammattiopisto, a college of vocational education and training in Kotka/Finland, Green Horizons in Cork/Ireland, the library of the Carinthian University of Applied Science in Austria and Hauptbücherei Wien (central library Vienna, without PIC so far). Increasing cooperation in inclusive teaching initiated this project. A small number of hearing impaired trainees in commercial occupations are already taught in classes of RSIBK. Rather by chance than meticulously planned 3 hearing-impaired students successfully took part in the past project. We now want to continue on this road of cooperation of the two colleges. As we do not know in advance, that there will be a hearing impaired student in every flow, we will address the special needs topic in the preparatory workshop. In this workshop hearing impaired trainees will inform hearing trainees about different types of hearing impairments, technical aids and helpful attitudes. The work placement is scheduled for autumn including the autumn half-term holidays in North-Rhine-Westphalia. It might be necessary to adjust for different times if the occupation requires this ( cf. gardener) or if there are other problems concerning the student’s schedule. Preparation takes place at a weekend workshop. Apart from professional, geographical and intercultural preparation participants also receive training in working with a web-based learning platform. Hearing impaired participants are assisted in choosing the level of handicap compensation they need. During the work placement every participant has a mentor in his/her receiving organization. Participants keep in touch with their mentors in Germany through the web-based learning platform and its integrated blog. The mentors in Germany plan to visit the participants in their target countries. Taking part in this project is supposed to improve chances of permanent employment after the final exams. Accepting mobility on the European Labour Market is certainly a helpful attitude. Knowing more about quality management increases professional skills, now on a European level. At the same time participants for Ireland and Finland improve their communication skills in a foreign language in every-day situations. In Austria participants learn to better understand regional accents and learn that some professional expressions of Austrian German are different from the German ones. Soft skills such as the ability to communicate appropriately, intercultural competence, self reliance, asking for help and offering help are boosted by the project. Project tasks have to be uploaded onto the web-based learning platform. This trains ICT skills. As a long-term benefit we expect - better chances on the labour market for our participants - for our colleges useful contacts and experiences with inclusion, so that we can better support future hearing impaired participants - for our partners in the target countries further motivation to improve work placement quality and additional hands-on experience in mentoring German hearing impaired trainees.
