Start date: Jul 1, 2016,

Racism and antigypsyism against Roma and Sinti are widely spread in Europe, but rarely questioned. The visible results are violent assaults, agitation and hate speech in the media, as well as increasing social exclusion. In many countries, measures and initiatives against this form of racism are taken, but there is too little transnational exchange and too little transnational activities. In this project, 50 young Roma and non-Roma volunteers and activists from six countries, between the age of 18 and 30, will be encouraged in their commitment against racism and discrimination. They will exchange and discuss their ideas, initiatives, activities and open questions concerning this topic in an international youth conference on antigypsyism. The goals are to encourage the activists with regard to their knowledge, skills and the fundamental approach to take joint measures against racism. They will have the opportunity to learn from each other and from experts, how racism can be met in various fields and which possibilities exist to raise the awareness for this topic. This year we will have a special focus on racism, antigypsyism and school segregation and we will build a creative campaign around it. As the title of the conference ‘PUTREN LE JAKHA’ (‘Open your eyes in’ in Romani language) says, this activity will encourage participants to critical thinking in order to analyse and challenge social mechanisms of antigypsyism and exclusion. In workshop groups participants will prepare a press conference, a visual arts installation, a creative street action, a video documentation and social media activities, as well as a creative and interactive exercise to challenge antigypsyism. After the conference, the participants will have improved expert knowledge, know many different projects and initiatives, have dealt with methods and teaching materials and have engaged themselves in artistic ways to approach the topic. They will be encouraged in their commitment and qualified to introduce the new skills and experiences to their organisations and to realize them in their surroundings. Through this, not only the participants will be empowered, but also their organizations. Because of their important role as multipliers, they ensure that antigypsyism in Europe will be discussed and fought. The public activities and media coverage will ensure the wider impact of the project and a dialogue with local citizens and stakeholders.
