PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE WESTERN BALKANS – IMPROVEMENT IN THE FIELD OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF A “ONE HEALTH” EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC ARCHITECTURE IN WESTERN BALKAN COUNTRIES
Start date: Dec 1, 2013,
The harmonization of the public health (PH) system to EU standards is mandatory for the Western Balkan countries (BA and XK) in order to be accepted as EU member state candidates. However, lack of knowledge, efficient network and resources make this process slow and ineffective. Our Project's aim is to build-up and/or improve the educational and scientific PH architecture in the WB PC and to promote a "One Health" approach as relatively new and modern a concept in addressing PH issues. The aim will be achieved building WP PC's capacity in PH according to EU policy and standards as follows: a)Retraining WB teaching staff in the EU will be of the utmost importance to improve their academic capacity and the sustainability of the project itself making the WB PC meet EU2020 goals and WB labour market needs. b) Academic improvement of PH courses is mandatory and PH expert education will significantly contribute to the capacity building process. In this context, implementing a "One Health" PH advanced training Master course addressing WB labour market needs represents the main Project output. The Master's teaching staff will be EU and WB faculty, particularly WB staff after their training in the EU, as well as qualified staff from enterprises and PH official agencies operating in the WB countries. This will contribute to create a PH network between academic institutions, PH governmental agencies and labour market. c) A specific long-term wider outcome of our Project is the creation/improvement of a PH academic network between EU and WB institutions that will upgrade WB HEI international cooperation and promote a lifelong process of modernisation in the WB, facilitating their opening up to society at large. Guarantee of success in achieving both wider and specific Project objectives is the reliability and quality of the partnership founded on an already existing network involving most of the partners who took part in two successful Tempus projects on related subjects.
