1. Background of The Project.
Maria-Dabrowska Secondary School number 2 is unique in its region; a school has been educating for over 50 years. 70% of the school’s students come from rural areas, which limits their opportunities to attend language courses. On arrival at our school, as far as their performance in languages is concerned, they are underachievers. Our remedial measures are not successful in many cases, although the future of our students depends on languages to a serious extent. They have to take two of their school-leaving exams in languages (oral and written). Good results in these areas create important opportunities for young people, mostly from poor farming families. For many years we have been making efforts to make up for their educational shortcomings to provide them with better chances in life and prevent them from becoming unemployed. Our experience so far shows that it is not an easy task without the active cooperation of a large group of teachers.
2. That is why we have decided to achieve the following objectives:
• Raising the quality of our school’s performance
• Implementation of more efficient teaching methods and improvement of organizational solutions.
• Development of language skills of a large group of our teachers in order for them to participate on CLIL courses and cooperate in international projects involving our students.
• Encouraging openness towards people of a different heritage and culture.
• Promoting studying and using English as a communication tool within our European home.
3. Number and profile of participants.
18 out of 71 teachers employed by our school have been accepted to work on The Project. Their participation is necessary for the achievement of our goals. They are teachers as well as class teachers, willing to make the effort, in order to develop language competence, which is important for raising the quality of our school’s performance. Their dominant feature is openness towards others. For years they have been committed to the education of our students.
4. Description of activities.
• In the period between 30.04.2015 -25.06.2015 we will conduct the preparatory stage. Teacher of English will diagnose the individual level of the participating teachers and divide them into groups according to their level. Each group will be provided with a 34-hour course and instructed how to proceed with the help of online courses. Some support will be supplied by means of Skype.
• English teachers will reflect on their work so far and make a list of their needs, which will be passed onto our course providing institutions.
• From 3.08.2015-16.08.2015 we will actively participate in courses offered by IPC in Exeter
• On our return from Exeter we will continue the development of our language. We will make a film in Englis presenting our project.
• We will popularize the effects of The Project. Our publications will appear in local media. In our classes we will use ideas and methods learned in Exeter.
5. Methodology to be used in carrying out of The Project
Active team work will be our key method. We will use questionnaires, dialogues, pair work and group work. Advantage will be taken of modern technologies. eTwinning will play an important role in the process of project realization.
6. Among the immediate results of The Project will be the development of our teachers’ language skills which will enable them to participate on CLIL courses and cooperation in preparing educationally attractive interdisciplinary projects. English teachers will improve their methodological skills and knowledge regarding British and German culture and institutions.
7. We expect great positive impact on our students, their attitudes and exam results. The envisaged long term benefit will be the qualitative improvement of our school’s performance, which will contribute to the creation of a better image of our school in the immediate environment and region. Above all we expect that the educational chances of our students will be much improved.
