Start date: Mar 1, 2015,
End date: Feb 28, 2017
PROJECT
FINISHED
The project is in the context of European Voluntary Service of ERASMUS+, involving two volunteers and is expected to have a duration of 6 months. Project activities are centered at Rethymno which is one of the major important nesting beaches for loggerhead sea turtles in the Mediterranean. The volunteers will be involved in all the project activities, which include collection of scientific data, active management of sea turtle nests as well as environmental education and public awareness. Main project objectives include (1) providing young people with the opportunity to work directly for the conservation of a protected marine species, (2) promoting the importance of protecting the marine and coastal environment, and (3) acquiring knowledge that can make young people adopt a friendlier attitude towards the environment, which is something that can be used no matter where they are in the world. Participants are expected to gain experience on the conservation of protected species and habitats, as per the EU’s Habitats directive (92/43/EEC).
