PROJECT
FINISHED
This project takes place in a conservation area run by Fundatia ADEPT at the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains within the Tarnava Mare Natura 2000 in Transylvania, Romania. A group of 8 Maltese youths and 8 Romanian youths with a passion for environmental awareness and protection, conservation and European biodiversity will work together and with local community members through a variety of activities in this conservation area for a period of two weeks, between 21st June and 6th July 2016. The programme involves participants carrying out activities related to conservation of the environment with the majority of hands-on activities encouraging them to be innovative and creative when approaching environmental tasks. The activities are aimed at encouraging the youths to think across a wider spectrum when trying to solve environmental issues and come up with conservation ideas and solutions. The tasks are also designed to promote teamwork, leadership skills, build new friendships as well as intercultural and social competencies. The project aims at increasing awareness of environmental issues and provide skills for conservation management as well as develop conservation attitudes to ensure that any research programmes and career/personal choices the youths undertake later on in life have minimal impacts on the use of resources. It also links the world of education and work by providing a memorable hands-on experience of theoretical knowledge previously covered in ecology syllabi during their two years at sixth form. The project is envisaged to have a positive outcome on the personal development of individuals; in knowledge, skills, attitudes and values. It will also increase the youths’ chances of employability both locally and overseas. It is hoped that this experience will help foster attitudes conducive to environmental protection to help contribute towards creating a better future for the next generations. Sharing of knowledge obtained from this experience with other youths as well as media coverage and articles regarding the benefits that youths attain from such projects, should encourage public policies to prioritise the involvement of youths in environmental awareness programmes. Apart from all this, the activities carried out by the youths, will empower them, thus providing better human resources for the organisations involved.
