Promoting lifelong healthy eating habits among youth

“Promoting lifelong healthy eating habits among youth: Food4YOUth” is an 8 days Youth Exchange (9 including 1.5 travel days) that will involve 45 people (35 participants + 7 group leaders + 3 trainers) from seven EU countries: Spain, Italy, Romania, France, Greece, Lithuania, Portugal. The Youth Exchange will take place from the 5th to the 12th of November 2015 in Puerto de Sagunto, a small town of 40.000 people, situated on the coast about 25 kilometres north of Valencia, Spain. The theme of the Youth Exchange is in accordance with the EU’s third health programme, running from 2014 until 2020, that states among its objectives, to promote health and to generate and disseminate health information and knowledge. This is why the participants will be young citizens aged between 18 and 26, with little or no previous knowledge on the subject. Educating young people in eating well and exercising can play an extremely important role in the future development of health problems and diseases. Moreover the positive effects of prevention can also be seen in an increase of employability (healthy people are more likely to find employment) and overall happiness of the population: by educating young people in healthy eating habits, we want to create a more responsible, active and aware population, that will in turn enjoy higher longevity and a more fulfilling life. The project’s objectives, in line with the Erasmus+ priorities, are to develop competences and become aware of socially relevant topics such as the importance of eating healthy in the modern society, thus eliminating health risks, to strengthen and promote the European values of solidarity, intercultural awareness and personal wellbeing, fostering dialogue and debate, thus increasing a sense of European citizenship, all the while increasing the visibility of the Erasmus+ Mobility opportunities and improving the language skills of the participants, as all the activities will be held in English. The methodologies that will be applied in order to achieve such objectives will be mostly informal and non-formal learning methods, such as peer learning activities, group activities, outdoors activities and first-hand experiences, together with some moments of more formal learning. These methodologies will be implemented through a series of different activities such as classes and workshops, outdoors activities that will require getting involved with the local community, group activities and games, as well as presentations to be prepared and delivered by the participants about their national culinary cultures and traditions. The group will also go on a trip to the fields where some of the typical products are grown and prepared, thus learning first-hand how the production of food works. Go Europe will coordinate the activities with the help of the seven highly competent and experienced partner organisations, in order to ensure that all phases of the preparation, implementation, and following diffusion of results run smoothly and all needs and requests of the participants are met.
