Promoting Intercultural Competence in Translators

The core aim of this project is to produce a comprehensive toolkit making it easy for HE institutions within the EU to introduce Intercultural Communication into their postgraduate programmes in Translation. To this end, the project will produce (1) a complete module in Intercultural Communication (2) the necessary materials to include Intercultural Communication as a cross-curricular theme running right through such programmes and (3) a summary report presenting the project's findings on what constitutes good practice in the teaching of Intercultural Communication to translators.There is a very clear need to produce these things. It is acknowledged by practising translators, academics and the DG Translation that intercultural skills are an integral part of what translators need. At the same time, these skills are often not explicitly developed in postgraduate programmes in Translation and there is little published literature on good practice in this area, making rapid innovation difficult.Seven partner institutions from across the EU with relevant expertise will work together on the project. Initially, a needs analysis will take place to determine how far, and in what ways, Intercultural Communication is currently being taught to translators on postgraduate programmes. This needs analysis will then feed into the design of a curriculum framework and the production of teaching and assessment materials will follow. All of these products will be piloted and revised and the whole process will be rigorously quality assured.The three deliverables described above will be made available right across the EU through the project website and events to which all potential beneficiaries will be invited. The result is expected to be that far more HE institutions will be integrating Intercultural Communication to translators and embody best practice in doing so.
