In a rapidly changing world with an increasingly eurosceptical climate - due to new challenges such as migration, high youth unemployment rates and the decay of values - schools need to take action. Being part of the Europe School Programme of Hesse, the Goethe-Gymnasium aims at both preparing its students to grasp the chances of the European labour market and to become active members of the European community of shared values , e. g. by assuming responsibilty for the integration of refugees into our society. This generates a huge demand for teachers with solid cross-cultural and project management skills to transfer European ideas.Project goals and measures:With a significant number of teachers in charge retiring within the next two years, our school urgently needs to re-implement and multiply cross-cultural and project management skills to guarantee the quality and variety of our current European programmes (school exchanges, integration of refugees into our projects). Therefore five teachers shall attend cross-cultural and project management training courses, in order to improve their skills significantly. During the courses, participants will also look for new project partners (school exchanges, job-shadowing) and seek the exchange of knowhow, esp. methodology, to further our school development objectives (SOL, i. e. the promotion of self-initiated learning among students like encouraging and developing own ideas, setting own goals, reflecting on the results which also includes failure, and all-day school concept).Profile of participantsThe five teachers should:- come from different departments (I: modern languages and arts, II: social studies, religion and ethics, III: maths and sciences)- have proved to be highly committed, open-minded and ready to promote European ideas- already have some cross-cultural project experience - have a good command of at least one foreign language, preferably English- be willing to share and spread the training results- be willing to integrate refugees into their future projectsMethodology for project implementation :The participants will implement cross-cultural skills in their lessons and pass on their knowledge to our staff and our students. They will join relevant school committees in order to institutionalise the training results. They will be charged with providing professional advice to current cross-cultural projects and helpimg develop new ones. Expected effects and long-term benefits:The training will boost the participants' motivation and commitment towards European ideas which we expect to go viral in our Europe school community. In passing on knowledge to our entire staff, we also expect future cross-cultural projects to be more effective. This will help us maintain a high standard of exchange work and develop new quality measures. As for our students, effective cross-cultural projects are also more attractive and will provide long-lasting positive experiences linked to Europe. The improvement of language skills and cross-cultural competences will encourage our students to go abroad and take into consideration chances the European labour market offers them. By integrating refugees into our cross-cultural projects, we promote social and European political awareness for the benefit of both sides.In addition, we expect valuable contributions to our current school development objectives (self-initiated learning and all-day school concept).
