Nunthorpe is an average-sized primary school and one member of the teaching staff, the MFL specialist teacher, went on a week-long immersion course in France in order to learn new ways of teaching French within school and to be introduced to new resources to use in the classroom and to improve linguistic skills and knowledge. Activities undertaken improved language and cultural knowledge, evaluated teaching techniques and methodologies in primary education. Visits took place to a local school in France for observation of practice and networking. Participants explored the use of ICT in teaching languages and learnt how to use artwork and songs to develop language skills. Participants shared good practice with colleagues on the course in a ?Show and Tell? activity and throughout the programme. Results and impact attained: Teacher is more confident about own language skills and French is used much more regularly within lessons, to create more opportunities for the pupils to be ?immersed? and develop their speaking and listening skills. A wider variety of material and resources, particularly authentic French music, short animated stories and adverts are now used to provide native speaker experience within the classroom. Participant continues to share good practice with colleagues from the programme via ?Mini group? and email. Longer-term benefit: MFL teacher who went on the course is now teaching French in 4 primary schools, sharing and disseminating good practice.
