Podnoszenie jakości nauczania języka angielskiego w klasach IV-VI

Primary School No.32 (Group of Schools No.21) in Bydgoszcz is a local state school. The school takes part in various national projects, initiates a great deal of teaching innovations and develops international cooperation via eTwinning projects. The students achieve very good results in national tests which they take at the age of twelve.
In order to increase students’ motivation for learning English as well as support the gifted students more effectively, our school took part in a project called ‘Increasing the quality of teaching English in primary school’.As part of the project, two English teachers, Małgorzata Jara and Barbara Drat, did a two-week course for European teachers of English ‘Creative Activities & Motivating Materials for the Secondary Classroom’, organized by International Study Programmes and held in Southampton, England, from 30 June to 12 July, 2015.
Both teachers have been working at school for over ten years. Małgorzata Jara is the school coordinator of international cooperation, has carried out three eTwinning projects and helped other teachers with their own projects. Barbara Drat has organized numerous school language competitions and is the author of ‘Great Dictation’ – an annual local competition for young students of English in Bydgoszcz.
The programme of the course included advanced language practice, workshops on teaching English as a foreign language with the emphasis on creative activities and motivating materials, workshops on British culture, day visits to a secondary school, lesson observations and the opportunity for discussion with the British teachers.
On their return from Southampton, the teachers have been making use of all the acquired skills, techniques and materials in everyday lessons and
after-school clubs. Małgorzata Jara has started an English culture club for fifth-graders and extra classes for sixth-graders preparing them for the national test they take at the end of the school year. Barbara Drat has prepared several school language competitions to be held during the annual event at our school called ‘The English Week’. In order to increase the students’ motivation for reading books in English, the school has purchased a number of abridged English novels and short stories to the school library, and the teachers have prepared little tests checking the students’ understanding of the plot.
The two participants of the course have also been sharing their experience with other teachers. For their colleagues, they have prepared ready-to-use lesson scenarios, activities and materials on British culture. At the beginning of the school year they organized a workshop on ‘Creative activities’ for the other teachers of English. Barbara Drat carried out a series of lessons presenting some latest techniques, showing how to organize interesting and inspiring classes. Małgorzata Jara has been using creative activities during the lessons watched by a trainee student.
In November 2015 the school organized and hosted a workshop on ‘Educational Mobility’ promoting the idea of Erasmus+. About thirty teachers of different subjects as well as head teachers of local schools attended the workshop. A representative of the City Council and the head of the Educational Centre for Teachers were there delivering some useful tips.
In addition to that, in October 2015, the two teachers organized and opened the first free library in Bydgoszcz with books in English for teachers. Having visited such a place in Southampton, they decided to implement this original idea in their hometown.
In the short term, the whole project should increase the level of motivation which is the key factor affecting students’ language success and their school results. The gifted students are given more possibilities to develop their language skills and interests and go beyond the curriculum.
In the long term, the effective and interesting ways of teaching English could become one of the main school's assets. The school also intends todevelop international cooperation and promote European educational projects.
