PROJECT
FINISHED
The project called Increasing the Level of Teaching Foreign Languages and Improving the Effectiveness of the I nternational Exchange concerns High School nr 3 in Rzeszów, the capital of the region Podkarpacie on the south east of Poland. It was a one-year project aiming at familiarising teachers with new methods of teaching German and English which would result in improving the effectiveness of teaching both subjects as well as raising the attractiveness of learning. The project attempted to promote the effectiveness of the existing international collaboration depending primarily on organizing exchanges of young people from different countries conducted in German and English. The organizers broadened the collaboration and included new projects and partnerships. Our experience shows that high level of foreign languages education and students’ international exchanges are mutually dependable. The development in one field causes immediate increase in the other. Within our project three teachers were sent for the courses improving their qualifications. The teachers who were provided with this opportunity were two certified teachers with broad teaching experience; one is an English teacher (who also teaches German but within smaller amount of hours) and the other is a German teacher. The third person is an English teacher with small working experience – a contract teacher. Two teachers were chosen for the project because of their significant achievements in foreign language teaching. In our school, they have also initiated and remain most engaged in the international exchange. Their involvement include an active collaboration with organizations enabling such exchanges e.g. Krzyzowa foundation and the partner school in Germany. These teachers participated in two courses developing their teaching qualifications. One of them lasted 2 weeks and the second one lasted 3 weeks and their goals were participating in a language and methodological course . One of them took place in Germany and the other in Great Britain. Our teachers participated in the courses accordingly to their major subject of teaching. Sending the third English teacher for a 1-week methodology and language course in Great Britain contributed to this teacher professional development and provided this teacher with the help needed to minimize the distance between this teacher and more experience English teachers. As a result of project teachers gained new teaching qualifications which contributed to the raise of the popularity of the subjects among the students and boost their motivation to learning the languages. It is of vital importance also because German and English are the two languages in which our student international exchange is conducted. Such exchange contributes not only to the development of students’ interests but also gives them additional skills to develop language competence. The additional qualifications that our teachers gained during the courses helped and help them in more effective management of the international exchange. Such training enabled our teachers to help minimizing the language barriers our students experience and encourage their eager participation in the international exchange organized by our school and significantly improve its effects. Thanks to the project our school developed new form of intentional exchange - letter exchange, which enabled our students to develop new contacts to their peers in Germany which happens in English. Making the exchange more effective and attractive have a positive effect not only on our students but also on students from the participating countries. Al long-term advantage of the project is the improvement of the positive image of our school in terms of foreign language teaching among the local community. The project contributed to the general image of our high school as a place where young people can interact with their peers from different countries from the European Union and expand their language skills. Thanks to that our school is perceived as such by the graduates of middle schools in the district which contributes to the number of new candidates for our high school. We strongly believe that giving close attention to the development of foreign languages teaching and learning as well as the international student exchange and school collaboration the European dimension of our high school increases.
