Playing Outside the Box
Start date: Jan 11, 2016, End date: Dec 10, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

All European countries are experience a lack of interest from youths to participate or play traditional music. Apart from this a small country like Malta do not have a conservatory or a school dedicated to the development of skills in music. On the other hand in Malta we have a lot of youth who volunteer in the music sector, something which is not common in Spain and Ireland. This project will help all participating youths to learn from the strengths of the other groups and share their weaknesses in order to build a better musical career and stronger organisations in the music sector. The main aim of this youth exchange is to bring youth with different cultural background together and discuss their main interest; music. This project includes three mobilities, taking place in Malta, Spain and Ireland, bringing 39 youths and 6 youth leaders together to discuss their main concerns and opportunities for a career in music. The three groups will be made up of youths aged between 15 and 23 years with a common interest in music.Through different activities to be held during the different mobilities we will learn on the differences and similarities of all three participating groups; Ghaqda Kazini tal-Banda, Conservatorio Profesional de Musica Adolfo Salazar, and Cuisle Avondhu. The project aims for the integration of modern music with traditional forms of music and the current demands of the society. Apart from this we want to create a space where the youths will discuss what opportunities they have when investing in music and how to take up these opportunities. The specific objectives of this project are: - enhance employment and entrepreneurship skills in the music sector; - learning different traditional music; - using music as a tool for integration, especially those youths and persons with special needs; - the importance of volunteering in the music and culture sectors; - the need to shift from volunteerism to professionalism in once music career; - learn how to preserve traditional music and adapt our traditional music according to the changing culture; - how to use music to have a healthier lifestyle; - how to make use of media and the present technology to enhance our musical skills; and - the opportunities that the EU gives to musicians. The three mobilities will take place in: - Spain between 28th March and 4th April, 2016; - Malta between 28th June and 5th July, 2016; and - Ireland, between 14th September and 21st September, 2016.The youth exchanges will target different topics including employment and entrepreneurship, culture, integrating persons with fewer opportunities, volunteering, health, media and the opportunities that we have being European citizens. The methods to be used will vary from workshops, discussion to hands on activities, visits, performances and also outreach activities. The main learning outcomes from this project are:- the ability to intercultural collaboration and methods of exchanging artistic and creative ideas. Here, the members of both ensembles are encouraged to present their ideas and put them together to a cultural performance;- appreciate the value of various forms of art and culture and detect the importance of it for their personal development - the diversity of cultural activities in Europe;- learn how to transform artistic ideas into the visualization and/or audible impressions (e.g. in the video project);- we will learn how to use digital media in the creation of digital videos;- increase our awareness on the European opportunities; and- learn new opportunities that exist in the music sector in Europe. As a long term benefit we envisage to have a stronger cooperation among the three different groups leading to international projects in the music sector, hoping that we might also have an opportunity to host them once again as part of the activities of the European Capital of Culture that will take place in Malta in 2018.
