PHOTOTHERAPYEUROPE in prisons
Start date: Jan 1, 2013,

This project aims to develop, through the involvement of seven partner organisations, the use of phototherapy within EU prisons in promoting the emotional learning of prisoners. Emotional learning, a process through which a person may develop emotional intelligence, capacity or skills to perceive and express emotion, and regulate emotion in self and others (Mayer et al. 2000), is particularly vital for prisoners given that it has been suggested that learning to regulate emotion and enhance emotion management skills may be key factors in the successful rehabilitation of offenders (Gaum et al., 2006). However, despite the wide range of educational and learning opportunities offered in prisons in the EU, an important gap has been identified with regard to the provision of ‘emotional learning’ opportunities in prisons in the EU.This project aims to address the emotional learning of prisoners in EU prisons through the use of phototherapy, defined as the use of photographs within psychotherapy (Weiser, 2002). Phototherapy may offer an opportunity for emotional learning, through which clients experience more realistic self-concept (Phillips, 1986), improvements with impulse control, social skills and self-esteem (Cosden and Reynolds, 1982), and decreased depression and anxeirty (Loewenthal, 2011)Final products, in the form of practitioner guidelines, lesson plans, photocard set and a manualised form of treatment, with be created, alongside an in depth training programme delivered to 350 participants across the 6 countries. The impact of this project will be experienced by the partner organisations, staff, participating practitioners and trainees, through the development of European knowledge and expertise and well as future opportunities for collaboration. Further, this project will enable practitioners involved in the emotional development of prisoners to use phototherapy with prisoners in enabling an opportunity for emotional learning.
