FINISHED
Phonehenge is new kind of project. According to our knowledge something comparable has not been done before. Phonehenge aims at creating a metaphor for Europe and intercultural communication. The project will do so by employing means that often go by the title "Urban Intervention".
Phonehenge consists of twelve telephone booths that will be redefined, resurrected and reconsidered. After having been recreated the booths will be installed in a public space. The whole project is thought to be an enduring endeavour. This means that the whole project will be a permanent intervention being exhibited and used permanently. Within the framework of an international youth gathering young europeans from five different countries will rethink and redesign 12 telephonebooths (including the direct surroundings). The project itself aims at opening the borderland between the artistic and the political realm on social, cultural and political levels. The number of telephonebooths resembles the twelve stars depicted on the European Flag - a steady symbol for the idea of communication, intercultural exchange and participation.
60 participants will - together with international artists - form and experience a whole new and creative approach to deal with political issues and voicing opinion. The telephone booths will serve as a metaphoric canvas to Graffiti, Welding and Eperimental Collaging. At the end the participants will have authored and designed an artistic process that visualizes Europe from their point of perspective - a creative voice expressing a narrative that will cause much attention throughout the whole of Europe.
In the end will not just be art but an interactive project that challenges visitors to become part of the message and thus become part of the project itself. Every booths will be given its own Twitteraccount. The booths' Twitter account data will be visible within the booths (Open Coomunication Ressource). Thus, visitors can join and enrich the discourse from within the booths.
That way an artistic project becomes a vivid "Urban Intervention" with an extreme outreach potential. This bears the chance for a sustainable European discourse within the realms of the digital as well as the analogue. We have no idea what the project will look like in the end, neither do we know which messages will conveyed and spread - this "ignorance" is inherent to the project, since we want the whole process to be a space inside which the participants can unfold according to their ideas and wishes. Real participation and diversity within the European dimension are some of the key aims of "Phonehenge".
The project will be documented in Real Time. A collaborative picture blog will allow every participant to post and publish individual views on the project and its processes. The blog invites those who can not take physical part in the project to participate digitally.
