Pflege im Nachbarland
Start date: Jun 30, 2014, End date: Jun 29, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project „nursing in a neighbouring country“ allows eight pupils of the local nursing school Regensburg attending the second and third year a two-week placement in Plzen (CZ). The pupils will be guided by German speaking nurses. Therefore the trainees do not need Czech languages skills. As the theoretical background they had lessons in: anatomy, gynaecology, paediatrics, surgical care and transcultural nursing. The participants get an insight into the health system of the Czech Republic and basics of the language. They have the opportunity to fulfil working hours in nursing care in the fields of gynaecology, paediatrics and midwifery. If possible they will see a delivery because the hospital has 3500 delivery’s a year. In Germany is a decline of the birth rate and this is the reason while we choose this partner. Furthermore nurses and caregivers with migration background will increase in German health care facilities in the next few years. Also the hospital of the medbo KU hires nurses and medics in foreign countries to get enough qualified employees. On the other hand there are more and more people with migration background who need professional health care. Therefore the nurses and caregivers need the cultural background to work with this people. This project allows the participants to change the role as a caregiver and to recognize what it means to work in a foreign country with unknown habits. Another object is that the quality of nurse relating to the migrants should be increase with the experience the participants have. This should reinforce the professional working environment with the background of transcultural nursing. The general aims for the participants are the refreshment of the autonomy and personality, learning new skills, working in a foreign land and get in touch with a new and perhaps unknown language. A secondary aim is that the participants learn how to deal with social skills in a land with unknown habits and the skilful handling with the Internet, Skype and Smartboards. Nursing abroad in the Czech Republic becomes acceptance because many people have reservation against the Czech health care system. The fact that the participants join an EU project let them perceive that they are citizens of the EU. Activities: At the beginning they get to know the nursing school and the University hospital Plzen. At the same time the language training starts (e.g. city ralley with Czech words) downtown and in the rooms of the nursing school where are some training materials for the special medical language available. The participants have some excursions to get an insight in the health care facilities like nursing homes, nurseries and paediatric homes. Daily they have to work with registered German speaking nurses on the wards (shadowing) where they learn to take care for pregnant women after normal or abdominal delivery, new-borns, the surgery ambulatory, paediatric ward and the operating theatre. The participants share their experiences with their colleagues in Germany via Skype.
