Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project intends to analyse and question the practices in music education system in Portugal and to investigate and implement new pedagogical strategies and curricular improvements. Being a teaching system with a very traditional pedagogical approach, the music teachers are not being able to adapt themselves to the constant changes in the music students’ population; their practices still replicate repertoire and methods from the XVIII and XIX century, maintaining outside the school the music from our days and the music that students hear and like. This project is the first phase of a change that the school intends to promote in its curriculum and in the pedagogical methods and practices of its teachers. In this phase, the teachers and pedagogical and artistic management will participate in several training courses in the areas of music teaching pedagogy and creative performance to get acquaintance of the alternative approaches. The school’s leaders will also look for partners to cooperate in the field of music teaching and creative performance and in music teaching investigation. To experiment this alternative approaches a process of self-reflection will be initiated by the teachers, developing a pilot project with students to evaluate the students’ responses to these pedagogical and curricular strategies. This project will have regular reports and will promote discussion in the school's pedagogical and management bodies, and with the teachers, engaging them in the discussion of proposals for the creation of a new curriculum or, at least, new strategies and pedagogical methods. In the second phase, if we get to the conclusion that there are positive changes to implement in our school reality, we intend to suggest some proposals for curricular changes. We also intend to disseminate the results by creating music teachers training courses for our teachers and for teachers from other schools.
