Perception, Attitude, Movement - Identity Needs Action
Start date: Oct 1, 2009,
The European Union is the contemporary example of multi-national political integration in the world. This makes the equal participation of its member states in the European unification process highly desirable and imperative. To achieve EU goals there emerges a timely need to reinvestigate common lay perceptions of European Identity. Therefore PAM-INA (Perception, Attitude, Movement – Identity Needs Action) aims at identifying perceptions/understandings, attitudes/attachments and ways of articulating/experiencing the idea among its youth.First school curricula in the 8 countries are compared to examine how the idea of „Europe“ is manifested and expressed. The data collected is evaluated to reveal relationships between the teaching of “Europe” and syllabi goals. Furthermore, PAM-INA proceeds with the help of ethnographic qualitative and quantitative research among students. These results are used to create a tool kit which will be tested in schools and evaluated by local feedback groups. The webpage will contain a European Info-Centre in the consortium’s languages about the topics of the 3 levels of PAM-INA: a) daily life, b) cultural awareness and c) active European citizenship. Additionally, it consists of a blog and guestbook (in English) where students may express their ideas of Europe. Thus the tool kit aims at deepening the students’ knowledge of Europe, strengthening media literacy and promoting CLIL.Enabling teachers to use the webpage, a student activity book and a teacher manual in the national languages will be added. In order to integrate PAM-INA into schools and universities PAM-INA-ITT (PAM-INA in Teacher Training) will be created and experienced within the On-Campus Event. It can then be widely disseminated and used in schools all around Europe even after the lifetime of the project. The outcomes of PAM-INA provide tools for students, teachers to be and teachers in service to define and develop an idea of “European Identity” as well as necessary teaching strategies towards a sustainable EU identity construction.
