Participatory Democracy from Schools to Municipality

The EVS project "Participatory Democracy from Schools to Municipality", lasting 12 months, based in Turin and its surrondings, involves a volunteer from Spain aged between 18 and 30 years old. Project is born in partnership between Centro Studi Sereno Regis (coordinating and hosting organisation) Ajuntament del Puig de Santa Maria (sending organisation). Project objective is to support the volunteering activity of a young person in favour of the promotion of participatory democarcy processes from schools, to the no profit world up to local institutions and municipalities. Participatory democracy gathers together decision makers, civil society organisations and citizens to discuss important topic and build decisions on more shared basis. Participatory democracy is not an alternative to representative democracy but it is a way to promote listening and participation of those groups not totally listened, and between them young people are a significant number. Volunteers will be active around 30 hours per week in the following activities: To design and implement of raising awarness activities in high schools about participatory democracy (with non formal methodologies)Creation and training of groups of peer educatos inside schools with the role of supporting decision making processesTo Design and management training acivities for young people and promote their role as "antennas" on the field to promote young participation and activism To design and to facilitate participatory democracy processes in partnership with local institutions and citizensTo design and promote events of structured dialogue between young people and decision makers. To develop a research on participatory processes To apply the participatory approach to the youth work to promote volunteering opportunities in the field of democratic participation To train youth workers on the topic of young active citizenship To organise artistic and creative moments in which young people can produce social campaigns, videos and other artistic products to promote young participation to the democratic life To develop educational materials and spread them at european level To promote evs as a form of civic activism During her evs, oru volunteer will learn how to design, support, facilitate, evaluate educational activities on the topic of the project, She will act on a transnational context, she will have a confrontation with volunteers coming from different geografical and cultural backgrounds, but building with others a common vision of democracy and active participation of young people. Project focus on volunteer skills and desire of being active, we promote her initiative and craetivity in a context that believes in non formal education and informal relations inside and outside our organisation. We apply the participatory approach expecially toward the volunteer and we give value to her opinions and aspirations. EVS volunteer and young people who will benefit from her activities in the local community can have from the project: training, opportunity of cross-cultural exchange, knowledge about participatory democracy e ways how to implement it, web platforms where keep the contacts, links and knowledge built during activities. Starting from these points we can image new educational activities even after the ending date of the project. The local impact will be a growing offer of educational activities, characterized by a non formal and peer education approach on the topic of participatory democracy. Regarding the partner organisations the common project and the common implementation of activities will moltiply the good practices exchange and approaches to the problem of the young people detachment from politics.
