In its 37 years of existence the "Association Camphill Le Béal" has welcomed over 500 young volunteers. These young people have come from different countries from all over the world to experience social work in Le Béal. Many of them have continued their professional paths in this direction. The international and intercultural dimension promotes openness to the world and enriches social life in Le Béal.
The Camphill Association Le Béal manages a residential care home for people with a mental handicap.
The 3 main areas of the project are:
Domestic life, workshop activities and cultural/artistic life.
The residents live in small groups. The four living units, called houses, consist of five or six residents of different skill levels, ages and difficulties. Each group of residents is accompanied by team of educators, some of whom live on site with their families, as well as one or two young volunteers.
Domestic chores (cooking, cleaning , dishes, shopping ... ) are performed by educators with the residents and volunteers. Everyone is involved in these areas to the extent of his/her possibilities.
All residents participate in regular workshop activities. The emphasis is put on the social aspect of work: working with others. In each one of the four houses there is a cooking workshop and a laundry workshop. We have a small farm and a large vegetable garden. A workshop transforms herbs and promotes locally grown products (lavender, olives, fruit). The artistic and cultural life takes an important place Le Béal and finds expression through various events ( concerts , shows, exhibitions , conferences) , the celebration of festivals of the year and activities such as choir , theatre and painting.
The association itself has a hall, called "Grand Atelier" which serves to host local artists , musicians, actors as well as for various in-house activities ( sports, projection of films, production of plays ... ). This hall is a meeting place for neighbouring institutions as well as for members of local community of Taulignan (e.g.primary school).
Through the long-lasting relationships they have created with the volunteers, the residents are able to develop a certain picture of the world that goes beyond their day to day life. The volunteers amongst themselves often create long-lasting friendships. The network of former volunteers is an important element of life in Le Béal. They are friends and often come back for visits.
