Our Community
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

'Our Community' highlights the importance for young people of knowing about where they are from, engaging with their community and feeling pride in their own community, history and traditions. The partners come from a range of geographical settings across Europe with urban and rural partners and all with distinct languages and cultures. This project will help them to feel confident in themselves and to be able to make connections with other young people from different communities across Europe. Furthermore by engaging with other young people from different countries and cultures, young people will develop their language skills and strengthen their knowledge to be able to take advantage of the opportunities available to them in tomorrow's Europe. Teachers will also benefit from seeing different educational settings and cultures and from the opportunity to exchange and share good practice across the schools involved in the project. The project envisages a number of activities to be carried out within each organisation, as well as joint project work to be carried out leading up to and during project visits. The project is divided into six themes which reflect different aspects of community involvement: Festivals, Foods and Traditions; Sport and Healthy Living; Community Reflection and History; Supportive Community and Civic Responsibility; The Arts; Sustainable Environment. By engaging with these six themes and through work with local partners, young people will understand how their community has changed over time and what they can do to contribute to the future development and needs of the community. There are considerable opportunities for young people of all abilities to be involved in the project and indeed, the project may create opportunities for volunteering and work experience for young people who may have been at risk of leaving school without a positive destination. A variety of methods will be used to carry out the project such as presentations, field trips, creation of short videos, development of resources, joint project work as well as the use of a wide variety of media such as social networks, eTwinning, wikis, blogs and other communication tools. In terms of results, we hope to see that our young people will be more confident, more accepting of diversity and more resilient. Furthermore, we hope that they will increase their communicative ability in a modern language, that they will engage on a deeper level with their community, for example through volunteering or involvement with local associations and that they will have greater knowledge of the opportunities offered to them on a European level. Impact will be measured via a number of methods including questionnaires, social network interaction and feedback from students, parents and other stakeholders. As for longer-term benefits, we hope that our young people will develop life-long friendships with some of the other students they meet through this project and that schools will continue to develop the networks that have been created. We also hope that the enthusiasm generated by this project will feed into younger students so that more students will be keen to take part in such international projects and that students will see the learning of a modern language as a fundamental aspect of the 21st century skill-set, thus leading to increased uptake for language options and greater motivation.
